Home At Jen's

Was discharged from the hospital and am now at Jen's. We had to rent a hospital bed and a wheelchair and had to purchase a bedside commode and walker. Kaiser would not provide me with them because I am an out of state member -- what they call a visiting guest. Great treatment the whole time I was in but I was put in a Catch 22 situation by their not one of us crap.

Could not be discharged until the items had been delivered and set up but Kaiser Admin refused to provide anything. $200 bucks was the cost of one month's rental and the purchase of the walker and potty. When I'm not so medicated, I'm going to do some research because they way they handled this part totally sucked. Jen had to put everything on her credit card -- thank goodness for her because I did not have mine with me at the hospital.

Am glad to be home. Hospital bed is comfy. Am not allowed to get up for any reason without assistance. There is a very heavy plaster cast on my right leg that runs from the base of my toes all the way up to my upper thigh... sucker feels like it weighs 50 lbs. Tis the temporary one - I see the doc on the 1st and hopefully get a lighter one - old fashioned heavy plaster makes sure that I am not putting any weight on it and encourages me to stay in bed.

Was great having diner with the entire family tonight :) :) :)

Thank goodness you're home! Huge hugs to you and your whole family.
When I had to buy one of those items you mentioned, it cost $65 and my son got it for me. Medical supplies are very expensive.
Breathing a big sigh of relief.

Oh, Suze, so glad you're home with all your girls! Sorry to hear about the insurance troubles (sigh), but yeah, figure that out when you feel better.
Take your time to heal, and we'll welcome you back to your hosting duties when you feel up to it. Hope the pain meds are working.
I turned on the 'puter after the thunderstorm just in hopes of an update...glad to see you're home.

Powerful beats strong...something to remember! Good, good news, overall.
So glad you have family to help you. You are frequently mentioned in various threads at the "home blog", y'know.

Still 12 weeks of no weight bearing? Damn. That's hard to imagine, but hopefully, it will go quickly. One day at a time, as we all know.
So glad to see posting for yourself; you are now on day two of the road to recovery!

Again all the best, Suzanne. Following your situation and why we can't even pretend to get together (as a starting point)to decide as a functional society that everyone is automatically covered for all health care. Sending my love and concern as best as I can manage.

  9. You're gonna be okay. My hope is that the continuing ride you take with the insurance will be a smoother one. Colorado is not a bad place to be this time of year.

  10. Glad to read an update from you Suz! I know how happy you must be that you're back with your family. May the days fly by quickly so you can get that 50lb cast removed! And until then, just rest up and stay as comfortable as you can. We love ya.

btw I'm shedding the LL nom-de-blog, at least over here at your place :-)

  12. Oh, Suzanne, I'm so glad you're out of the hospital. One thing I will share with you is to check (soon) about how long you have to appeal this ridiculous ruling from Kaiser about your post-surgical equipment needs. If you don't have your policy with you, call the ombudsman to find out how long you have to file an appeal. My experience is sometimes it's very short, like during your recuperation. Ask them for more time, or file a short letter as an appeal and tell them you'll provide more detail when you're healthy. Just be sure you get into the appeal process under the deadline so you can squawk at them once you're in fine fettle!

Best wishes to all of you packed into little Jujube's house!

    1. thanks teddy -- i'm meeting with jen's sister-in-law next week to go over all of it -- the no equipment and that blasted 90 day window that will expire before i get out of the cast. she's done a lotta work with insurance companies, including kaiser, about coverage issues in her work advocating for dialysis patients.

So glad to hear you have someone to consult with expertise on this. I don't want you to worry about it yet, but it's true, time limits can be short. It's great you have such connections right in the family!

For now, hope you're resting and absorbing all the love, there in the house with you and incoming across the toobz. (((Hugs to Suze))))

    3. thanks hon. i am horizontal in the hospital bed taking up the living room, leg elevated with pillows, and the head of the bed raised so i can use the computer. there are *some* advantages to a hospital bed for sure. i am so feeling the love -- it blows me away how much support and love and prayers etc i've gotten. anytime i'm feeling low, i can go back and read what everyone said and get all warm and fuzzy feeling inside. such a debt of gratitude i can never repay. i am so lucky to have the family and friends i do.

Hi Suze. Pat9 here. I'm grateful for CTuttle for giving us the link to your blog again. ... So happy you're not still hospitalized. And so glad you have all your girls nearby. Your gorgeous granddaughter must be a perfect joy. Being near her will surely hasten your recovery.

I hope it doesn't hurt to laugh and this was funny in a strange way. BUT I remember - at about 15 - I had a hospital stay and just across the hall were two elderly women. Both were in with fractured hips, both in traction, and they Did Not Get Along. They started in the morning - almost politely. They disagreed on everything and they shouted at each other the rest of the day. The screaming and the curse words - oh my. The nurses were in and out all day - I think to make sure no objects were flying. Wisely most things were beyond reach and no further injuries occurred. It was quite entertaining for a 15-year old. When I was in for a broken-arm surgery two summers ago, there was nothing like that. So Dull.
... So I hope you recover quickly and completely and (((YOU))) feel all the love going your way from all of us far away.
