Low Tides

We had some very low tides this week. These are pictures of yesterday afternoon's low tide - taken shortly before Jennifer and crew showed up here to celebrate her birthday.
I could have walked across the bay to the spit and my feet would have only gotten wet crossing the feeder creekbeds.

17

Janis Ian - 17 (thanks jofish)

Two pictures I took at 9pm tonight. The sky was still bright blue and the foreground is much lighter than the camera captured. It got too dark to see the spit a wee bit before 10pm. Later this morning, 8am-ish per the tide guide (see blogroll to the left) we are supposed to have a super low tide. I don't know if I will stay awake all night in order to see it or not. That's the only way I will see the bay empty out as empty as it can get - otherwise I will be sound asleep.

Time

Drove over the hill today to see Jen, Mike, my granddaughters, and the newest addition to their family, Dodger.

Jen had made a forking fantastic chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting that had chopped peanuts sprinkled on top. Yummy yummy for my tummy!

The girls are just as cute as they were when I saw them last year - just taller. Dodger is a puggle, a cross between a pug and a beagle and is cuter than cute. Dublin is having pain in her shoulder and/or back region that causes her to whimper with pain. Shortly after I arrived, Mike took Dublin to the vet for an additional set of xrays to try to figure out what is causing her pain.

Talked to Stephanie on the phone and she was enroute to the doctor with a suspected case of food poisoning. Got a text from her later that it was food poisoning.

Turn The Page

Bob Seger - Turn The Page.

Weather dood says chance of showers this weekend. Good thing I planted my 3 geraniums and all the herbs in their planter boxes today. If my back wasn't acting up, I also would have planted the two reds in their pots on the back deck flanking the back door. My goal is to plant them tomorrow (if it is not raining).

Hazy

Hazy day today - it is 78 outside with lotsa clouds - sorta muggy feeling. A good rain would put everything to right again and would probably ease this little sinus headachy thing I have going.

Was going to go to Fred Meyer today and get anti-skeeter candles but... that will have to wait until tomorrow. Dabbing apple cider vinegar onto the skeeter bites - I think I must be the flavor of the month.

Just got off the phone with Stephanie - she was on her way home from the Pride Parade in Portland. Said she got real pissed at the protestors who were subverting scripture into hate speech. Stephanie knows her Bible and started quoted scripture back at them that destroyed their hateful premise. Dang, I'm proud of her :)

Sneezing

No wonder I have been sneezing - geez, look at the pollen washed ashore by the high tide. Egad (and achoo).

Cloudy all day until 3ish when the sun finally started to emerge. Warmed up quickly from the 50's to the 60's with the addition of sunshine. Weather dood says it will be overcast all week with sun breaks each afternoon. Today was more than sun breaks - actual sunshine for the past couple of hours.

Of course as soon as I say that, I'm sure the sky will cloud over again (laughing).

Until then, Token and I will be on the deck enjoying the sun.

Silver

Twas another silvery day here at the peaceful retreat on the bay. The skies were overcast all day but temps were into the 60's. A good day for doing laundry and other little chores. A day to procrastinate about going to the store for yet one more day.

The old roses on the property area blooming and smell spicy sweet.

Spotting

Was up on Cape Meares near the lighthouse today at the north platform. Remembered to bring my camera besides the binocs. This is the looking view north from the north platform. Near the two patches of dirt in the upper right hand corner on the far cliff is a peregrine falcon nest with 4 chicks.

Looking down to the Pacific, the closest toe of the cliff in the center foreground is where the black oystercatcher (BLOY) nest is believed to be. Saw one BLOY in the same area today that we saw two last week - just above the black band..

Waves swirling around the small island rocks. The two larger rock islands in the background have bird and sea lion populations

A surfer on the beach south of Oceanside.

Looking south - the mouth of Netarts Bay. The 'finger' of Cape Lookout is jutting almost completely across the horizon. The entrance to Netarts Bay is almost directly in front of Cape Lookout's mt from this angle.

Stopped and had a latte at Brewin' In The Wind in Oceanside. Came back home and putzed around the house instead of doing the stocking up grocery shopping - that will have get done tomorrow. Today is my day off and I'm enjoying the off.

You can click on any of the photos to see them full sized. Much more detail is evident when full size.

Black Oystercatcher

Spent part of the afternoon up at Cape Meares looking for the Black Oystercatcher and their nests. My landlord invited me to go with her - she is a spotter and it was way kewl. Saw two peregrine falcons flying overhead (they also have nests on the cape). Allison left me a spare set of binoculars in case I want to help spot when she is not out here.

We saw two pair of the oystercatchers but did not spot their nests. Cape Meares has two spotting platforms off the parking lot and we were spotting from the northern platform. Way kewl. Next time I go up, I'm bringing the camera. Forking gorgeous!

Birds On The Bay

Finally got to take a picture of the pair of goldfinches that have been visiting the feeder. The bright yellow male is not camera shy but his duller female counterpart sure is.

Also saw this pair out walking around checking out dinner on the bay's rising tide but don't know what they are.

There are two barn swallow nests in the rafters above the front deck. Can't see what's inside them - usually just the pointed up into the air v-shaped tail of a bird with its head and body doing something inside the nest. When a second barn swallow arrives, the first one flies off and the second one does the tail in the air bit.

Had an unknown variety small bird fly into the house the day before yesterday - I was wearing a long sleeved shirt over my tshirt and quickly slipped it off and gently over the bird batting its wings against a window. Trying not to touch it and being very very careful, I carried it out onto the deck and opened the shirt. Off it flew and I returned inside, closing the door behind me. As I was walking out with the bird, I saw Bailey walking towards us - in stealth kill mode - but I was faster than her. Again.

This is the 3rd bird that has gotten trapped inside after flying inside the open front door - twice hummingbirds had done so earlier in the spring and now this little one. I've gotten each one outside before Bailey gets to them.
