I Won
I won this CD last night during KPIG's Fresh Pork segment. I was the correct caller when the second song from this CD was played and I won! I am so jazzed!!! (as CT would say) KPIG has been playing two songs from it every night this week and I really wanted to win - the ear candy on this is awesome.
From Amazon's editor review of the CD:
The blues-rock guitar hero's studio vaults were nearly empty when he died in an August 27, 1990, helicopter crash. This set unearths a 1978 Austin session track of "You Can Have My Husband" with Vaughan as second fiddle to his then girlfriend, singer Lou Ann Barton, but it's undistinguished compared to the previously unreleased live performances that compose this disc's heart. Vaughan contributes teeth-baring pentatonic solos to Lonnie Mack's "Oreo Cookie Blues" at Atlanta's Fox Theatre in 1986 and brings his bullish tone to the late blues piano stomper Katie Webster's "On the Run" at the 1988 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Bonnie Raitt's distinctively keening slide adds elegance to a "Texas Flood" from Bumbershoot 1985 in Seattle, and when Stevie's older sibling Jimmie Vaughan stops by Saturday Night Live to play rhythm on a 1985 "Change It," li'l bro' squeezes out screaming fireworks. But the best cut's a breathtaking '88 Jazz Fest slugfest with Texas Telecaster blaster Albert Collins that's jammed with howling, shaken notes and machine-gun riffing. Both are in top form. The rest is culled from Vaughan's guest appearances on others' releases or previous retrospectives and include matches with blues godfathers B.B. King and Albert King, as well as Johnny Copeland and A.C. Reed, Jeff Beck, Austin barrelhouser Marcia Ball, surf guitar king Dick Dale, and David Bowie, whose "Let's Dance" introduced Vaughan to the mainstream in 1983. --Ted Drozdowski
I bolded the reason I wanted this CD - here is the UTube for that slugfest.

Pullin' Back The Reins
A little kd lang Pullin' Back The Reins on this blustery day up at the little cottage by the creek in the redwoods.
Out of nowhere this gust of wind
Brushed my hair and kissed my skin
I aimed to hold a bridled pace
When with love itself I came face to face
Pullin back the reins
Trying to remain
Tall in the saddle
When all that we had will
Run away
With a will of its own
I know your soul is wild and free
Like this galloping inside me
Tossed by instinct and where we land
Is vast and certain of all thats planned
Pullin back the reins
Trying to remain
Tall in the saddle
When all that we had will
Run away, run away
With a will of its own
You know, I finally learned to break to run
And gently harness the love of someone
Equal parts of wait and trust
Is in control of the both of us
Pullin back the reins
Trying to remain
Tall in the saddle
When all that we had will
Run away, run away, run away
Still no snow here but lots up on all the summits around me. Before it started in again, my rainfall total for the year was 21.30 inches. So far today, another 1.08 inches has fallen and the storm really isn't supposed to hit us until later tonight.

Stormy Monday Again
Almost 3/4" of rain so far but not a flake of snow. Highway 9 north of me (and up the mt) was closed due to snow today. A few hours after I came back from San Jose on Bear Creek Road, it was snowing on Bear Creek Road up by the summit. Here - nada, zip, zilch.
Sigh.

No No Song
Ringo Star, singing the No No Song, a great Hoyt Axton tune.
Santa Cruz Emergency Management's automated phone warning system was activated yesterday afternoon. I got a robocall advising me of expected very low temps starting today, warning me to protect animals, plants and pipes.
I got up to a whooping 46 today and we are expected to get down into the 20's, maybe even the low 20's tonight. There is a chance of low elevation snow if everything lines up as expected but (whine whine whine) only down to around the 1,000 to 1,500 foot level. I am at 627 feet. Dayam. No fair getting the cold without any white stuff. Been drizzling off and on (mainly off) today.
Weather dood said it will be this way through Wednesday and possibly Thursday. Gonna be very cranky if I get snow temps with no snow. Very cranky indeed.

Cats
Did not see the movie this is a parody of (300) but it sure had me laughing. I stole the video from BustedNuckles over at his blog, Onery Bastard. The grey at the end looks like my Bailey except Bailey's eyes are yellower.

The Blue Velvet Chaise
Today is the last day of getting the place back ready after it came off the market at Thanksgiving. I have been paying the price for not doing any housework other than dishes and laundry since then. Oh well. I have gotten rid of so much stuff - when I moved up here, when I stripped things down to sell the place - it feels like there really isn't anything left that is "me" to strip out. I am back to living in a house that is not "me", living a lifestyle that is not "me". Should not be much a surprise that there does not feel like much "me" is left anywhere anymore. Judas forking priest, it brings back all that crap from when I was married to the fundy, who demanded that everything look perfect to anyone who looked. Looking perfect was more important than the actual people.
And, of course, the fundy is hassling me for money - he has sent nasty emails threatening lawsuits unless I jump through his hoops according to his time schedule. I feel like telling him to just get in line and to take a fucking number. He told baby girl that his gift to her was he would pay her medical insurance (without discussing that with me) - and is demanding that I reimburse him for half of that gift - otherwise, I'm not a good mother and am not involved in my daughter's life and I am the bad parent that he always knew I was.
I want to just crawl into bed or under a rock or hide or something.
The blue velvet chaise is going away. Dayam, I really fucking loved that piece of furniture. I know it is just a piece of furniture but it was mine, it spoke to me. It mattered.
I'm going to go throw up now.

And Then There Was One
The Washington Post has a story up that just fascinates me.
And Then There Was OneThere is an amazing video accompanying the story that I can't figure out how to embed so you will have to watch it here. I used the graphic showing the location at the top of this post.
Discovery of a lone survivor of an unknown Indian tribe in Brazil set off accusations of murder and a struggle over ownership of one of the world's last great wilderness areasBy Monte Reel
Sunday, January 13, 2008; W12THe Rumor Was A Wild One, and it seized Marcelo dos Santos with the power of a primary myth.
There's an Indian living in the woods around here, some local ranch hands were saying in 1996. He wears no clothes. Get near him, and he vanishes. He is utterly alone.
Marcelo knew a lot about elusive Indians -- more than just about anyone. He was a sertanista, a uniquely Brazilian profession that is part jungle explorer, part ethnologist and part bureaucrat. As a member of Funai -- the Brazilian government agency charged with protecting indigenous interests and cultures -- Marcelo's specialty was "uncontacted" Indians, those tribes that remain isolated from modern man. His territory was Rondonia, a heavily forested area that had been largely undeveloped before the government declared it a state and opened it to agriculture in the early 1980s. After that, loggers and ranchers began streaming in, and Marcelo blamed them for the denuded pastureland that was eating into the forest from all sides.
Just a few months earlier, Marcelo and his tracking partner Altair Algayer had made first contact with an isolated tribe of Kanoe Indians that had been reduced to five survivors. Shortly after that, they found another tribe, the Akuntsu, with only six members living several miles from the Kanoe. They'd gotten the land for those tribes declared off-limits to development. And for that, the loggers and ranchers who wanted a piece of that land for themselves viewed Marcelo and Altair just as suspiciously as those two viewed the loggers and ranchers.
But this rumor, of a single Indian on his own in the jungle, was too compelling to ignore, even if it meant spending time among the kind of people that Funai explorers generally tried to avoid.
The rumor's trail led to a logging operation near a cattle ranch. Marcelo and Altair, careful to sneak past the boss, found the company cook.
Read the story. Watch the video. Wow.

We Can't Make It Here, Anymore
I sure wish I could find a UTube of James McMurtry's Choctaw Bingo. Dang, I like that song and it always gets me up dancing. Maybe that will break the funk I'm in. I posted Santana's Soul Sacrifice (live from Woodstock) last night over at the Lake - a song that usually fills me with joy. Last nite - eh.
